چکیده

BACKGROUND AND AIM Plant foods may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. METHODS AND RESULTS We assessed changes in the intima media thickness (IMT) of the carotid artery and diet in elderly men. Men (n=563) aged 70+/-5 years were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups (dietary intervention, omega-3 supplementation, both or neither) using a 2 x 2 factorial design. B-mode ultrasound of the carotid arteries and calculation of dietary intake were performed at baseline and after 3 years. We previously showed that omega-3 supplementation did not influence the IMT, thus the dietary intervention (n=233) and no dietary intervention (n=231) groups were pooled. The dietary intervention group had less progression in the carotid IMT compared with the controls (0.044+/-0.091 mm versus 0.062+/-0.105 mm; P=0.047). This group increased their daily vitamin C intake (P=0.005) and intake of fruit, berries and vegetables (P<or=0.001). Increased intake of vitamin C and of fruit and berries was inversely associated with IMT progression (r=-0.181; P=0.006 and r=-0.125; P=0.056, respectively). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that increased intakes of vitamin C and of fruit and berries were associated with less IMT progression in the intervention group and in the total study population, after adjustment for consumption of dietary cholesterol, cheese, saturated fat and group assignment. CONCLUSION Vitamin C containing foods may protect against the progression of carotid atherosclerosis in elderly men.

Antioxidant vitamin status and carotid atherosclerosis in the elderly.

BACKGROUND The oxidative modification of LDL is thought to play a crucial role in the initiation of atherosclerosis. Antioxidant vitamins can protect LDL from oxidation, and high intakes or blood concentrations of these vitamins have been linked with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Few data are available on the importance of antioxidant vitamins in earlier stages of atherogenesis. O...

Assessment of Serum Magnesium Level and Its relation with Atherosclerotic Carotid Intima Media Thickness in Post-Menopausal Women

Objective: A magnesium deficiency is known to be involved in many abnormalities in the post-menopausal women. Previous studies proposed that magnesium (Mg) might prevent atherosclerosis. In this study the efficacy of serum magnesium level and its relation with carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in post-menopausal women was evaluated. Methods: Eighty Iranian Postmenopausal women were included...

Evaluation of the relationship between hepatic and cardiac iron overload with MRI T2* and carotid intima media thickness with Doppler ultrasound in beta thalassemia major patients

Background: Iron overload is caused early progression of atherosclerosis in beta thalassemia patients due to regular repeated blood transfusion. MRI T2* is a gold standard non-invasive method for detecting hepatic and cardiac iron overload. The aim of this study was the comparison of carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in the patients and healthy control groups with Doppler ultrasound for ear...

Antioxidant Supplementation in Atherosclerosis Prevention (ASAP) study: a randomized trial of the effect of vitamins E and C on 3-year progression of carotid atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVES To study the efficacy of vitamin E and C supplementation on the progression of carotid atherosclerosis, hypothesizing an enhanced preventive effect in men and in smokers and synergism between vitamins. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS Double-masked two-by-two factorial trial, randomization in four strata (by gender and smoking status) to receive twice daily either 91 mg (136 IU) of d-alpha-toco...
